Crumbs are Back

Tuesday might we will be working on the assembly of crumb blocks into the planned quilt top. If you have blocks (or want to stitch up some more before the meeting), please bring them. Cathis is in charge of the project, so contact her if you have questions.

We will be having a planning meeting for our following meeting session. Begin gathering your ideas or list of things you want to learn so you can present your ideas at this meeting.

A hearty thank-you is due to those of you that completed your "Janine" challenge quilt. Janine expressed the thought that by donating them they brought new life by being the base for your creativity and quilt-making skills, and a gift to the recipient of the quilt as well. There are a few that have not been turned in yet, but we expect they will be finished soon.

The latest message from the Ables indicates that they are very busy, and HOT in Btisbane. A summer Christmas was a very new experience for them. They have set high goals for the mission work, and they are determined to meet them. We wish them continued good health and well wishes.

Night Group Mystery

This will make a long table runner 31 by 63

Tonya suggests at least two different darks and two different lights, and the use of scraps would be great.

This project will be on-going for the next three meeting nights.

Invitation to Fall Challenge

Table Runner Instructions, Part 1

Multi-background Fabric Table Runner

Fabric Requirements:

Approximately 60, 2 ½ʺ x 6 ½ʺ pieces cream, beige, taupe, or tan fabrics½ yard border/binding Scraps for flowers One piece each, approx. 20ʺ x 44ʺ, for backing and batting½ yard fusible web

Directions:

1. Piece all background rectangles together into one long 2 ½ʺ-wide strip. Mix up the fabrics. Press all seams in the same direction.

2. Using your favorite method, baste batting to backing. Mark center lines on batting with a pencil or air-erasable pen. Then mark a rectangle, 12ʺ x 36ʺ, exactly in the center of the batting, extending lines beyond rectangle as shown.
3. Start at lower left-hand corner. Lay one end of strip, right side up, with fabric extending beyond the lines. Set the strip at a 45° angle. Use scissors to cut strip to right size, making sure to cover pencil lines. Measure approximate length of next strip and cut. Lay it, right sides together, on top of first strip and pin in place. Sew both strips together through all layers with a 1/4ʺ seam allowance. Sew a few stitches in same spot as you begin and end each strip to secure threads. Press or finger press toward the added strip.

4. Keep adding strips, to fill in the drawn rectangle, cutting them to size as you go.

Our first meeting of the month on March 10th featured our next blocks of the month by Cathie.

We're preparing a background for a table runner project. JoAnne gave the following fabric suggestions:

"For next Tuesday's meeting (March 10), we are each bringing approximately 60 pieces of background fabric (2 1/2 by 6 1/2 inches) to trade with each other for the pieced background for the table runners we will be making on March 31.

The fabric should be good-quality 100% cotton, cream to beige to light tan background color. Printed fabrics are fine; in fact, I encourage print over plain."

JoAnne's photo shows the variety of fabrics that she is using.

More instructions will follow as details become known.

Part 2 of the color class by Christina will be the subject of the next meeting. We have a homework assignment.

Baby Quilt Challenge

Fabric for our annual baby quilt challenge is available in the quilt room. Fabric costs vary as do the available prints this year. Fabric cuts range from fat quarters to half yards. Remember to pick up your print right away! Quilts will be shown at the annual quilt show in July, and then will be donated through New Frients community outreach program.

The baby quilts can be any size and should be completely washable. The small ones go to the neonatal units of the local hospitals. Your participation in this annual project is appreciated.

Please take note: The PDF file containing the cutting and supply information for our annual Quilt Celebration in honor of National Quilt Day will be e-mailed to you. Direct questions to Carmen for further information. This event is a community service project for New Friends.

The 12-inch sampler blocks will be easy to stitch and many sizes of quilts can be made. We hope you all will invite your friends and make this a special day.

Greetings from the Quiltroom

Christina gave an excellent discussion/demonstration on color this past week. JoAnne shared the progress made on the beautiful star sampler that the group has been working on.

I'd like to show the previous quilt picture that I took of the quilt in progress, but somewhere in my picture files I have lost it. However, we will soon see it in it's full glory! JoAnn has selected the perfect setting fabric to showcase the bright reds, pinks and blues of the stars.

Watch for updates on our annual Quilt Celebration that will be held all day on Saturday, March 14th. We'll learn to make blocks for a 12-block sampler during the day, instruction being given by board members of NFQC A soup and salad potluck lunch will be held with bread and drinks being provided.
